Extortion Allegations Surface During Bail Hearing, HC Seeks DG Jail’s Reply

During a bail petition hearing, shocking claims of extortion from a prisoner's relatives came to light. Taking serious note, the Chief Justice has asked the DG Jail to submit a detailed response through an affidavit.
During the hearing of the bail application, the matter of extortion from the family members of the undertrial prisoners lodged in the jail and taking money online in various accounts was placed before the High Court. Taking the matter seriously, the High Court has sought an answer in affidavit from the DG Jail.
The applicant Lukeswari Josh Abraham had filed a petition for bail of her husband imprisoned in jail through her advocate. During the hearing of the case in the single bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Kumar Sinha, the matter of extortion from the relatives came to the fore.
Keeping in mind the seriousness of the matter, the Chief Justice has said in the direction issued to the Director General of Prisons that how the wife (applicant) of the person imprisoned in the murder case along with the family members of other prisoners lodged in the jail have been forcibly extorted and forced to deposit the amount in various accounts.
The state lawyer said that some amount has also been deposited in the account of the applicant. At the same time, the bail petition of another co-accused involved in the same crime has been ordered to be listed on July 15, 2025. The court has directed the state advocate to send a copy of this order to the Director General Jail, Raipur for necessary information and compliance.
