Four-Hour Power Outage in Raigarh Today as Utility Replaces Overhead Lines; 14 Areas to Be Affected

Power supply will remain suspended for around four hours on Monday in several parts of Raigarh as the electricity department undertakes infrastructure upgrades ahead of the summer season. Officials said the shutdown is required to replace exposed 11 kV overhead lines with covered cables under a planned maintenance and safety programme.

According to the power utility, the outage will affect areas fed by the 11 kV Station Feeder originating from the 33/11 kV Girls College Substation. The work is scheduled to be carried out between 10 am and 2 pm, though the timing may be adjusted depending on on-ground conditions.

Among the areas likely to face power disruption are Civil Lines, Natwar School locality, SP Bungalow, Station Chowk, Atley Chowk, Darogapara, Gujarati Para, Pathik Hotel area, Good Luck Hotel area, Railway Colony, Gandhiganj, SP Office premises, Municipal Complex and Nayak Bada. In total, around 14 residential and commercial pockets will be impacted.

Officials said the maintenance is part of a broader effort to improve electrical safety and reliability before peak summer demand sets in. While several parts of the city have already been upgraded, a few stretches continue to rely on open conductors, which are more vulnerable to faults, weather-related damage and safety hazards.

The ongoing work is being executed under the Chief Minister Urban Electrification Scheme, which aims to modernise urban power distribution networks across the state. Replacing open wires with covered cables is expected to reduce the risk of accidents, minimise power tripping and ensure more stable supply during high-load periods.

Executive Engineer R.K. Rao of Raigarh Electricity Department Zone One said similar upgrades had been completed earlier in parts of the feeder area. “The remaining stretches are now being covered. To carry out the work safely, supply will have to be interrupted for a few hours. We regret the inconvenience caused to consumers,” he said.

Residents and commercial establishments in the affected areas have been advised to plan their activities accordingly and take necessary precautions during the shutdown period. The department said it would make efforts to restore supply as soon as the work is completed.

Officials also indicated that more such short-duration outages may be scheduled in the coming weeks as the department continues pre-summer maintenance and network strengthening works across Raigarh.
