Fraudsters Exploit Mother’s Illness, Steal Gold and Cash in Bhilai-Durg

A local businessman was allegedly defrauded of gold jewelry and cash after being lured by fraudsters under the pretext of performing religious rituals to cure his ailing mother. The incident, reported from the Chhawni Police Station jurisdiction in Durg district, has prompted a police investigation.

The victim, a resident of Sindhi Colony, Station Road, Durg, runs Sanjay Cycle Stores near Dhamdha Naka. According to his complaint, approximately 15 days ago, two individuals visited his shop under the pretense of checking bicycles. They obtained his contact details and maintained communication, introducing themselves as “Raju” and an accomplice.

The accused allegedly convinced the shop owner that his mother’s chronic health issues were caused by spiritual obstacles. Raju claimed that with proper puja-paat (religious rituals) and divine worship, the mother could be fully cured, but it would require monetary contributions. Over repeated phone calls, the accused gained the victim’s trust.

On January 16, 2026, the victim was asked to provide a coconut and ₹1,100 as an offering during a ritual near Power House Fruit Market, which he did. Following this, the accused convinced him that for the ritual to be effective, his mother’s gold jewelry and cash had to be kept in the home temple.

On January 20, around 2:30 PM, the victim was summoned to the railway station near Power House, Bhilai. He brought four gold bangles, each weighing approximately 15 grams (total 60 grams, valued around ₹5 lakh), along with ₹8,82,300 in cash, as instructed. The fraudsters promised to return in the evening to perform the ritual, but neither appeared nor responded to subsequent calls.

Upon realizing the deception, the victim filed a formal complaint with Chhawni Police Station. Authorities have initiated a probe under relevant sections of the law. Police are analyzing mobile records, CCTV footage, and other technical evidence to trace the accused. The victim has stated he can identify the perpetrators if found.

This case underscores the risks posed by superstition and exploitation of vulnerable individuals, particularly in the context of health and spiritual beliefs. Police have urged citizens to verify claims and avoid handing over valuables to unverified individuals, emphasizing legal channels for addressing such matters.
