Gangrape Case in Durg: Minor Lured with Job Promises, Retired PWD Employee Among Arrested

In a shocking incident, a minor girl in Chhattisgarh's Durg district was allegedly gangraped over eight years by six men who promised her a government job in the Public Works Department (PWD). Police have arrested three suspects so far, including a retired PWD employee, while three others, reportedly including high-profile individuals, remain at large.

The case came to light when the victim, now an adult, filed a complaint at the Durg women's police station on January 30, accompanied by her mother. According to the report, the assaults began in April 2018 when she was just 14 years old and continued until October 2025. The accused exploited her vulnerability by dangling the lure of employment, repeatedly assaulting her individually and in groups.

Authorities registered the case under sections 65(1) and 70(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with sections 6 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The victim described enduring severe mental and physical trauma throughout the ordeal, which persisted even after she reached adulthood without securing the promised job.

On Saturday, police apprehended Vijay Swain, 37, from Durga Nagar West in Bhilai, and Anil Chaudhary, 60, from Zone One in Khursipar. The following day, they arrested Govind Singh Nagvanshi, 62, a retired government employee from Chaukadiya Para in Rajnandgaon district. All three have been presented in court and remanded to judicial custody.

Investigators revealed that the accused systematically groomed the girl, starting with the first rape at age 14. They maintained control through false assurances of a PWD position, leading to multiple instances of gangrape. The victim's decision to come forward stemmed from the betrayal, as no job materialized despite years of abuse.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) and police spokesperson Manishankar Chandra confirmed the arrests and vowed swift action against the fugitives. "We initiated an investigation immediately after receiving the application," Chandra said. "Three accused are in custody, and we will ensure the remaining ones are brought to justice soon."

Sources indicate the absconding suspects include influential figures, possibly close to political leaders and government officials. This has raised concerns about potential interference in the probe, with calls for a thorough inquiry to uncover any broader network.

The incident highlights the pervasive issue of job scams targeting vulnerable youth, especially minors, in rural and semi-urban areas. Women's rights activists in Chhattisgarh have demanded stricter enforcement of child protection laws and faster trials in such cases.

As the investigation unfolds, police are piecing together evidence from the victim's statement and potential witnesses. The case underscores the need for greater awareness and safeguards against exploitation under the guise of employment opportunities.
