GST raids at Hind Coal Group in Bilaspur; suspected coal mixing and tax evasion under probe

The State GST department conducted fresh raids on December 15 at multiple locations linked to coal traders in Bilaspur, intensifying its crackdown on alleged tax evasion and irregularities in the coal sector. Officials searched coal washeries and offices of the Hind Coal Group at Gataura, Hindadih and Baloda, along with other associated premises.

The Hind Coal Group is headed by director Rajesh Agrawal. GST teams scrutinised transaction records, income statements and other documents throughout the day. Simultaneously, action was taken at five locations connected to the Indramani Group, including two premises of its director, Sunil Agrawal.

The latest operation comes just two days after GST teams from Raipur, acting on instructions of State GST Secretary Mukesh Bansal, raided 11 locations linked to three major coal businesses — Mahavir Coal Washery, Feel Coal and Paras Coal and Beneficiation. Those searches had drawn attention as Mahavir Coal Washery is reportedly linked to the family of actor Ankita Lokhande and businessman Vicky Jain.

Officials said the raids were based on prolonged surveillance of large coal traders, whose tax payments were found to be disproportionately low compared to their business turnover. During Monday’s operation, officers examined financial records from morning until late night, focusing on sales, purchases and tax filings.

Suspected coal mixing, tax manipulation

Preliminary findings indicate large-scale coal mixing at washeries and manipulation of tax liabilities to reduce GST outgo. Officials believe traders adopted multiple methods to evade taxes. Sources said several discrepancies were found in company records, though GST officials declined to comment officially during the ongoing investigation.

According to officials familiar with the probe, at least three major coal traders in the city had been under direct GST surveillance for a long time due to their multi-state business operations.

₹27.5 crore surrendered earlier

Following raids conducted earlier this week, three coal companies voluntarily surrendered a total of ₹27.50 crore amid fear of penal action. Mahavir Coal Washery deposited ₹10 crore, Feel Group ₹11 crore, and Paras Coal Washery ₹6.50 crore.

GST authorities said further action will depend on the outcome of document verification and assessment of tax liabilities uncovered during the searches.
