HC Seeks Govt Reply on CBSE Students’ Sports Ban

The High Court has asked the government to submit a detailed affidavit explaining why CBSE students are barred from state-level sports competitions. The next hearing is scheduled for August 11

High Court heard the case of barring children of CBSE schools of the state from participating in state level sports competitions. During this, the court has sought a detailed reply from the government on affidavit. The next hearing of the case will be held in the week starting from August 11. The case was heard in the division bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice BD Guru.

The High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of a decision of the School Education Department and started hearing. Children of CBSE schools have been barred from participating in state level sports competitions. A student had filed a petition in the High Court against this decision. The court, considering the matter serious, took suo motu cognizance and sought a reply from the Directorate of School Education (DPI).

The state government had recently decided that students of CBSE affiliated schools will not be able to participate in block, district and state level sports competitions. Due to this, more than 4 lakh children of about 600 schools have been directly affected. Earlier also a similar order was issued in the session 2023-24, but then the Education Department withdrew the decision on the request of Chhattisgarh Private School Management Association.

During the hearing of the case, the advocate of the government said that the students of the State Board of Secondary Education are not included in the sports competition of CBSE schools, they are organized separately. Similarly, school children of the state participate in state level school sports. A student cannot be given double benefit. After this reply of the government, the DB has sought a reply with detailed details in the affidavit from the competent officer of the state government.
