Heavy Police Deployment in Balod Amid Tribal Ritual Dispute; 20 Villages on Alert
Digital Desk
Authorities have deployed additional security personnel in Balod district ahead of a tribal religious gathering as tensions persist between groups over traditional worship practices and cultural heritage concerns.
A large-scale security operation has been put in place in Chhattisgarh's Balod district ahead of a scheduled tribal religious event at Jamdipat (Tuegondi) on Saturday. The administration has declared nearly 20 villages surrounding the site as sensitive and has intensified surveillance to prevent any untoward incidents. The precautionary measures come amid ongoing disagreements related to traditional worship practices and religious customs involving residents of Tuegondi, Keri Jungera, and Bade Jungera villages. Officials fear that tensions could escalate during the event, prompting the deployment of nearly 1,500 security personnel in and around the area.
The gathering, known as Dev Jatra, is being organized under the banner of the Sarva Adivasi Samaj and is expected to attract a large number of participants. Authorities have remained on high alert due to the area's history of conflict during similar events.
Security Tightened Ahead of Event
According to district officials, more than 500 police personnel were deployed on Friday, while additional forces have been called in for Saturday as a preventive measure. Security arrangements have been strengthened across sensitive locations surrounding Jamdipat and Pateshwar Dham.
The administration's concerns stem partly from an incident that occurred four years ago when stone-pelting reportedly disrupted a tribal community event in the same region. Officials are determined to prevent a recurrence of such disturbances.
On Friday, villagers from Bade Jungera staged a road blockade after expressing concerns about the alleged possibility of an animal sacrifice near the village. Police and administrative teams rushed to the spot, and the situation was brought under control following discussions with community members.
Dispute Over Traditional Beliefs
Leaders of the Sarva Adivasi Samaj have raised objections regarding activities taking place near a natural water source known locally as Jal Kaina. According to community representatives, the site holds deep religious and cultural significance for tribal communities and has long been a place of worship.
Community leaders allege that construction and cementing work around the natural water source have altered its original form. They claim that the development of a pond near the site has affected a location considered sacred by local tribal groups, leading to growing resentment among community members.
Concerns Over Idol Installation
Another point of disagreement involves the installation of an idol at the Pat Baba site in Jamdipat. Tribal leaders argue that their traditions are rooted in nature worship, with forests, hills, rivers, trees, and natural springs regarded as sacred spaces.
According to community representatives, idol worship is not traditionally part of their religious practices. They have questioned the installation of a statue at the site and sought clarification regarding its identity and purpose.
Administration Monitoring Situation
District authorities have stated that they are closely monitoring developments and maintaining communication with local leaders to ensure peace during the event. Police officials have appealed to residents to avoid rumors and cooperate with security personnel.
With thousands expected to participate in the Dev Jatra, the administration hopes that enhanced security arrangements and dialogue with stakeholders will help maintain law and order. Officials have emphasized that preserving peace remains the top priority as the religious gathering proceeds under tight security supervision.
