Historic Surrender: 103 Naxalites Lay Down Arms in Bijapur on Gandhi Jayanti
Digital Desk
On Gandhi Jayanti, 103 Naxalites in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district surrendered to security forces, marking the largest single-day mass surrender in the state’s history. This development signals a significant setback to the Maoist insurgency in Bastar.
Several high-profile commanders were among those who surrendered, including Southern Sub-Zonal Bureau communication chief Lacchu Punem alias Santosh, Company No.10 leader Guddu Farsa alias Vijay, and PPCM and Security Guard Commander Bhima Sodhi alias Kamal Singh. Collectively, 49 of the surrendering cadres carried bounties totaling Rs.1.063 crore.
The mass surrender reflects the impact of Chhattisgarh’s revamped 2025 Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy, which offers incentives such as an immediate Rs.50,000 cash reward per surrendered cadre, housing assistance up to Rs.5 lakh, land grants (urban plots or agricultural land), education support for families, and vocational training. Under the policy, group surrenders receive double the initial incentive, further encouraging collective action.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai hailed the event as a victory for peace and development, reiterating the government’s commitment to making Chhattisgarh Naxal-free by March 31, 2026. He emphasized that the policy balances firm security measures with robust rehabilitation efforts, aiming to reintegrate former insurgents into society.
According to police records, Bijapur alone has seen 410 surrenders this year, alongside 421 arrests and 137 Maoist fatalities in encounters. Across the Bastar range, nearly 970 cadres have surrendered voluntarily in 2025. The surge in surrenders is attributed to effective counter-insurgency operations, improved infrastructure projects, and targeted community policing initiatives.
The historic Gandhi Jayanti surrender underscores the policy’s success in incentivizing insurgents to abandon violence. Authorities believe this momentum will inspire further surrenders, accelerating progress toward a Naxal-free Chhattisgarh.
