Ahead of the paddy procurement season, the Balrampur district administration carried out a major operation against illegal paddy hoarding. On Monday morning, a joint team of police and revenue officials seized 143 bags of illegally stored paddy from a forest area under the Ramchandrapur tehsil. The operation drew attention when SDM Anand Ram Netam, in a dramatic Bollywood-style remark, warned the middlemen, saying, “Johnny, until you bow down, we won’t back down.”
According to sources, the police received a tip-off that some traders were smuggling paddy from Uttar Pradesh into Chhattisgarh through forest routes. Acting on the information, the team conducted a search operation and recovered the hidden stock. On seeing the officials, the smugglers fled the scene, abandoning their vehicles and the paddy.
The operation was led by SDM Netam with the support of the local police, revenue staff, and other officials, under the directions of the Balrampur Collector. Authorities stated that surveillance has been increased in border areas to prevent illegally imported paddy from reaching government procurement centers.
Government procurement of paddy in the state is set to begin on December 1. However, before the season’s start, middlemen have been attempting to buy paddy cheaply from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to sell it at the government’s support price in Chhattisgarh. The administration has termed this practice as detrimental to local farmers and launched strict enforcement measures.
SDM Netam said, “Illegal paddy trade will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Wherever such hoarding is found, immediate seizure and FIRs will follow.” His remarks and distinctive style made the crackdown go viral on social media.
The seized paddy and vehicles have been deposited at the police station, and further investigation is underway. Officials indicated that similar raids will continue in the coming days. The action has boosted farmers’ confidence in the administration while creating panic among the middlemen.
