After nearly eight years of waiting, Raipur’s much-awaited Kachna Railway Overbridge has finally been opened for public use. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai inaugurated the bridge on Friday night, following which vehicles began moving across the newly constructed route.

The opening of the overbridge has brought significant relief to residents who had been struggling with heavy traffic congestion caused by frequent railway gate closures in the Khamhardih-Kachna area. Local residents said the bridge has already started reducing travel delays and improving connectivity across several parts of the city.

Bridge Opens Finally

The Kachna Railway Overbridge project had remained under construction for years, causing frustration among commuters and nearby residents. With the inauguration now complete, traffic movement between Kachna, Saddoo, Ring Road-3 and surrounding residential areas has become smoother.

A drone video of the bridge shot during the night also surfaced online shortly after the inauguration. The footage showed illuminated streetlights, moving vehicles, and large crowds visiting the newly opened structure. Daily Traffic Relief

Residents said the biggest problem in the area was the railway crossing, which reportedly closed after every few minutes due to the continuous movement of passenger and freight trains.

According to railway officials, nearly 120 trains pass through the route every day. Because of this, the railway gate used to remain closed almost every 15 minutes, creating long queues of vehicles on both sides. Office-goers, school students, ambulance services and public transport operators were among the worst affected by the repeated congestion. Local resident Megha said people often remained stuck at the crossing for long periods, especially during office and school timings. Another commuter, Akash Joshi, said traffic congestion had become a routine problem in the locality. Residents believe the overbridge will now save both travel time and fuel consumption for thousands of daily commuters.

Night Drone Video Viral

The drone visuals released after the inauguration captured the overbridge glowing under decorative lighting while vehicles moved continuously across the structure. People gathered on the bridge late into the night to witness the opening ceremony and experience the newly operational route. Some residents were also seen walking and running across the bridge in celebration. Eight-Year Long Project

The Kachna Railway Overbridge has been constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 48.78 crore. Officials said the bridge is approximately 871 metres long and 12 metres wide. The two-lane overbridge connects the area near the CSCB office in Khamhardih to the Housing Board Colony side, improving movement across eastern parts of Raipur.

Apart from the bridge project, road widening work between Shankar Nagar, Khamhardih and Kachna was also carried out at a separate cost of over Rs 22 crore.Officials stated that the project aims to strengthen urban infrastructure and reduce traffic bottlenecks in rapidly expanding residential zones.

Massive Public Benefit

Government officials estimate that more than three lakh residents will directly benefit from the overbridge. For years, commuters were forced to wait under extreme summer heat or during heavy rains whenever the railway crossing remained shut. Traffic congestion often stretched for several hundred metres during peak hours.

School buses, emergency vehicles and office commuters frequently faced delays because of the railway barrier system. With the bridge now operational, authorities expect traffic flow to improve considerably in nearby colonies and connecting roads.

Traffic Diversions Managed

Due to the inauguration ceremony, temporary traffic diversions were implemented in the Khamhardih-Kachna area on Friday evening. Vehicles travelling from Anupam Nagar toward Kachna were redirected through the Shri Ram Nagar overbridge and BSNL office route. Similar diversion arrangements remained in place for traffic moving in the opposite direction. Police personnel and traffic officials were deployed at key intersections to manage vehicle movement and avoid congestion during the event. Despite the large turnout, no major disruption was reported during the inauguration program.

Government Highlights Infrastructure Push

Speaking during the inauguration, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the overbridge would significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve urban connectivity for lakhs of people. Public Works Department officials described the bridge as an important infrastructure addition for the growing capital city. The project is also being viewed as part of broader urban development and mobility improvement efforts in Raipur. Residents meanwhile hope the successful completion of the overbridge will encourage faster execution of other pending infrastructure projects across the city.
