Korba’s Daughter Brings Gold Glory to India; Kusum Sahu Shines at South Asian Goal Shot Ball Championship

Korba’s Kusum Sahu has made the nation proud by winning a gold medal at the First South Asian Goal Shot Ball Championship, held in Pokhara, Nepal, from December 16 to 19. The Indian contingent delivered an outstanding performance at the tournament, securing two gold medals in the men’s and women’s team events, with Kusum playing a key role in the historic success.
A resident of Old Basti, Bhandari Chowk in Korba, Kusum Sahu comes from a modest background. Her father, Sampat Lal Sahu, is a truck driver, while her mother is Dhanlakshmi Sahu. News of her international achievement has brought immense joy to her family and neighbourhood, with her parents expressing pride in their daughter’s dedication and success.
The four-day championship witnessed intense competition among teams from several South Asian nations. Displaying excellent coordination, discipline and attacking gameplay, both the Indian men’s and women’s teams emerged victorious in their respective finals to clinch gold medals.
The Indian teams were guided by experienced coaches from Bhiwani, Haryana. Parmveer Siwach of village Mittathal coached the men’s team, while Vivek Kumar from village Kharak served as the head coach for the women’s team. The overall leadership of the squads was handled by Amit Kaushik of village Umarawat.
Kusum Sahu’s Determined Performance
Speaking after the championship, Kusum said that teams and players from multiple countries participated in the tournament, making the competition challenging. Representing Chhattisgarh in the Indian team, she said her performance was consistent and rewarding. Kusum added that she has been working hard in the sport for several years and is determined to continue her journey to bring further recognition to India, Chhattisgarh and Korba.
Her achievement has drawn widespread appreciation, with sports enthusiasts, social organisations and well-wishers, including Pratik Kataute, Kailash Yadav, Gajendra Chauhan, Nand Kumar, Ashish Bhagat, Atul Yadav, Nikhil Yugal and Himanshu, congratulating her on the landmark accomplishment.
