Mahasamund Cash Seizure: ₹1.47 Crore, 2 Luxury Cars Held

Mahasamund cash seizure drives intensify as police recover ₹1.47 crore in five days; Income Tax Department begins probe into undocumented funds

In a major enforcement drive, the Mahasamund cash seizure operations in Chhattisgarh have led to the recovery of ₹1.47 crore in unaccounted cash over the past five days. Police intercepted multiple vehicles entering from Odisha and seized large sums after occupants failed to produce valid documents.

Officials confirmed that two luxury vehicles were also impounded during the checks conducted at inter-state border points. The matter has now been handed over to the Income Tax Department for further investigation.

Multiple Interceptions

According to police records, four separate cases were registered between March 16 and March 20 across different police station jurisdictions in Mahasamund district.

The highest recovery of ₹75 lakh was made on March 16 in the Komakhan थाना area from a vehicle coming from Kantabanji towards Raipur. Two occupants, both residents of Odisha, were unable to justify the source of the funds.

On March 19, another ₹25 lakh was seized by Patewa police during routine checking on National Highway-53 near Jogidipa village. The cash, mostly in ₹500 denomination bundles, was found in a luxury vehicle.

Raipur Link Emerges

One of the key developments in the Mahasamund cash seizure cases is the involvement of a Raipur-based person.

On March 20, Basna police intercepted a car arriving from Padampur (Odisha) and recovered ₹32.5 lakh in cash. The vehicle carried a Raipur resident along with a driver from Balaghat.

During questioning, the occupants failed to present any valid documentation regarding the cash, raising suspicions of illegal financial transactions.

Additional Recovery

In a parallel operation on the same day, Baloda police seized ₹15 lakh from an Odisha-registered SUV at the Sirpur check-post. Two individuals were present in the vehicle, but neither could produce documents supporting the possession or movement of such a large amount.

Police sources indicated that all four cases involved significant sums, yet none of the individuals could provide satisfactory explanations or paperwork.

Hawala Angle Suspected

Investigators are also probing a possible hawala link in the Mahasamund cash seizure cases.

Preliminary inputs suggest that some of the cash may have been intended for business transactions, including payments to jewellery traders in Raipur. However, officials have not confirmed any direct link and stated that the financial trail will be established through detailed scrutiny.

Official Statement

Additional Superintendent of Police Pratibha Pandey said that all seized cash and vehicles have been handed over to the Income Tax Department.

“Given the scale of the amount and absence of valid documents, the matter requires a detailed financial investigation. The Income Tax Department will examine the source and intended use of the funds,” she said.

Impact and Next Steps

The Mahasamund cash seizure highlights intensified surveillance on inter-state routes, particularly along the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border, amid concerns over illegal cash movement.

Such crackdowns are expected to tighten compliance among traders and transporters carrying large sums. Authorities indicated that more joint operations may follow to curb unaccounted financial transactions.

With the Income Tax Department now leading the probe, further disclosures regarding the origin and destination of the seized funds are expected in the coming days. The Mahasamund cash seizure case continues to be a significant public interest story within the broader India News Update cycle.
