Mahasamund police intercepted an interstate drug consignment, seizing 600 kg of ganja worth ₹3 crore hidden inside a commercial vehicle heading to Maharashtra.
Inter-state drug syndicate busted on Odisha-Chhattisgarh border as tech-savvy smugglers shift tactics to evade law enforcement.
A major interstate drug trafficking operation was disrupted on Sunday when the Mahasamund police intercepted a commercial vehicle smuggling contraband hidden beneath heavy machinery components.
The operation led to the recovery of 600 kilograms of ganja, valued at approximately ₹3 crore in the illicit market. According to local authorities, the consignment was being transported from Boudh district in Odisha and was destined for Thane in Maharashtra. The continuous flow of contrabands across state lines has pushed regional law enforcement into high alert along key transit corridors.
Midnight Interception at Murmuri Checkpoint
Acting on actionable intelligence, the Anti-Narcotic Task Force had set up strategic checkpoints along the interstate border routes. The breakthrough came during the early hours of the morning when teams stationed at the Murmuri Chowk under the Singhoda police station limits spotted a suspicious red Tata Mazda bearing a Maharashtra registration number (MH-46 CU-6060).
The vehicle was securely covered with black tarpaulin to project the appearance of a standard commercial logistics carrier. Upon halting the vehicle, the transit team conducted a thorough search, uncovering 24 plastic gunny bags hidden beneath large cardboard boxes containing industrial machinery. Each bag contained exactly 25 kilograms of high-grade ganja.
Veteran Carrier Arrested in Border Crackdown
The driver of the vehicle, identified as 65-year-old Mahboob Badshah Shaikh, a resident of Ambernath in Thane district, Maharashtra, was taken into custody on the spot. Law enforcement officials seized the commercial vehicle, multiple mobile phones, and cash alongside the contraband.
The cumulative value of the seized property is estimated at ₹3.12 crore. Initial interrogation of the suspect revealed that he was operating as a carrier for a well-entrenched network stretching from coastal supply points to urban distribution hubs in western India.
Evolving Modus Operandi Worries Authorities
"Smugglers are constantly innovating their methods to bypass highway checking," a senior police officer familiar with the investigation stated. "We have seen a significant shift in logistics over the past few months."
The local police administration noted that recent syndicates have moved away from conventional hidden compartments in private cars. Instead, traffickers are increasingly deploying:
-
Fake ambulances with emergency sirens
-
Commercial movers and packers trucks
-
Fabric vendors' vehicles
-
Inter-state luxury tourist buses
Third Major Border Seizure in Weeks
This latest bust highlights Mahasamund's position as a vulnerable transit bottleneck for narcotics moving out of Odisha. The area has seen relentless enforcement action in recent weeks.
On May 8, local teams intercepted a fake ambulance carrying 77 kilograms of ganja, arresting five individuals who were utilizing a pilot car to clear checkpoints. Just a day prior, on May 7, a modified pickup utility vehicle was seized with a consignment valued at over ₹1.14 crore. Investigators believe the same supply syndicates are behind these back-to-back shipments.
Expanded Network Investigation Underway
Local police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Special investigative teams are currently analyzing call detail records (CDR) from the seized mobile phones to trace the financial trail of the operation.
With multiple states involved, Chhattisgarh police plans to coordinate with their counterparts in Odisha and Maharashtra to identify the kingpins funding these massive consignments. Ground monitoring has been intensified at all internal district entry points to choke the transit route completely.
