Mayor’s Daughter Files Dowry Harassment Case Against Husband, In-Laws in Durg

The daughter of Risali Municipal Corporation Mayor Shashi Sinha has accused her husband and in-laws of sustained dowry harassment, alleging she was repeatedly pressured to bring a Fortuner car and subjected to physical and mental abuse. Police have registered a case and begun an investigation.

According to the complaint filed by 27-year-old Alka Sahasi at the Women’s Police Station in Bhilai Sector-6, the harassment began soon after her wedding on 21 January 2025. Alka alleged that her husband, Chitransh Sahasi, and his family insisted that, being the mayor’s daughter, she should have brought a Fortuner car as dowry. She claimed that even during the wedding reception on 23 January at Bhilai’s Amit International Hotel, her parents were allegedly told that she would not be taken to her marital home without the car.

Alka stated that although her parents provided household appliances, jewellery, furniture, and cash, the demands continued. She moved to Jagdalpur with her husband after the wedding, where the alleged abuse intensified. In her complaint, she accused her husband of refusing to eat food cooked by her, frequently insulting her, restricting communication with her family, and casting doubts on her character. She also alleged verbal abuse, threats of being pushed off the terrace, and repeated taunts over not bringing a luxury car.

Alka claimed she was forced to sign blank papers in January, later learning they were linked to divorce proceedings. On 4 March 2025, she was allegedly thrown out of the house, and her jewellery and belongings were withheld.

Following multiple counselling sessions that failed to reach a resolution, police registered an FIR against her husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and two relatives. Officials said the allegations indicated sustained mental and physical harassment, threats, and unlawful possession of her property. The case has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation is underway.
