A 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed during a violent clash that broke out Monday night during a Mahashivratri procession in the Shanti Nagar area of Durg–Bhilai, police said. Authorities have detained four to five suspects for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation.
The victim, identified as Nanu alias Chhay, was a local resident who worked handling horses at wedding ceremonies. According to family members, he had joined friends at a religious celebration that had been underway for two days. During the procession, he reportedly became involved in an argument with a group of youths, which escalated into a physical confrontation.
Eyewitnesses told police that the attackers suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed the teenager multiple times. He sustained serious injuries to his abdomen, head, back, and other parts of his body. Bystanders rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries late at night despite treatment.
Preliminary inquiries suggest the assault may be linked to a dispute that occurred about a month ago between the victim and some of the suspects. Investigators believe the earlier altercation could have motivated the attack. Following the incident, tension rose in the locality, with a large crowd gathering outside the police station demanding swift arrests.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (City) Sukhnandan Rathore confirmed that a case has been registered and that suspects are being interrogated. Police teams are also reviewing CCTV footage from nearby cameras to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify all those involved.
Officials said additional security personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain order and prevent further unrest. They assured residents that strict action would be taken once the culprits are formally identified.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have urged the public to cooperate and refrain from spreading unverified information.
