Missing Student Found Dead in University Pond: Family Blames Negligence, Not Suicide
Bilaspur, CG
A missing student of Guru Ghasidas Central University (GGCU), Bilaspur, was found dead in a pond inside the university campus on October 23.
The body was identified as Arsalan Ansari, a B.Sc. Physics third-year student from Kadipur village, Chapra district, Bihar.
According to police, Arsalan had been missing since October 21. His body was discovered floating in the pond near the University Teaching Department (UTD) area. After identification through his clothes, his father, Arshad Ayub, accused the university administration of negligence and alleged that his son did not commit suicide.
“My son cannot take his own life. The university management ignored my complaints when he went missing. Their negligence cost him his life,” said Arsalan’s father.
Family Alleges Delayed Response and Negligence
Ayub stated that when his son went missing, no prompt action was taken by the authorities despite repeated requests. Even after reaching Bilaspur from Bihar, he claimed the police and university officials tried to “send him back quickly” and initially refused to register an FIR.
Arsalan’s younger brother, Gauhar Ansari, also accused the administration of preventing them from meeting hostel students or checking Arsalan’s room. He alleged that the Chief Warden and Administrative Warden did not allow them to inspect Room No. 45 in Swami Vivekananda Hostel, where Arsalan stayed.
“If he was missing since October 21, how could the warden not know? This is clear negligence,” Gauhar said.
Injury Marks Spark Murder Suspicion
Doctors at Sims Hospital who conducted the post-mortem reported minor injuries on Arsalan’s head, raising suspicions of foul play. However, police said the preliminary investigation points to drowning.
The viscera samples have been preserved for forensic analysis, and the final PM report is still awaited.
Police officials confirmed the body was approximately five to six days old and severely decomposed due to prolonged exposure to water.
CCTV and Hostel Register Exposed Lapses
University officials reportedly checked the hostel CCTV footage and attendance register on Friday night, revealing that Arsalan had been missing for three days. Following the discovery of the body, police kept it in the morgue for identification.
Meanwhile, student organizations, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), demanded a high-level probe into the incident and questioned the university’s handling of the missing student report.
University Forms Three-Member Inquiry Committee
Responding to mounting criticism, the university administration announced a three-member investigation committee to look into the circumstances surrounding Arsalan’s death. Media cell in-charge Dr. Manish Srivastava confirmed that the body was sent to the family’s village after post-mortem and said the committee’s report will be submitted soon.
Campus Outrage Over “Insensitive” Response
Students accused the university of showing insensitivity by holding a felicitation ceremony on Sunday, the day after the body was recovered. Several student groups condemned the administration’s attitude, demanding accountability and strict action against officials found negligent.
