Negligence by Electricity Department Puts Lives at Risk

Contract Worker Shocked as 33 KV Supply Resumes During Transformer Maintenance

Negligence by Electricity Department Puts Lives at Risk

A serious lapse by the electricity department endangered a contract worker’s life when 33 KV power supply was suddenly restored during the installation of a Drop-Out (DO) fuse in a transformer. The incident raises concerns about safety protocols and coordination failures in high-voltage maintenance work.

A contract worker got severely burnt while installing DO (dropout fuse) on the transformer in the district's Fingeshwar town. 28-year-old Ved Ram Sahu Sender got caught in the current. The accident was so horrific that as soon as the current hit, sparks and smoke started coming out from below the knees in both the legs of the young man. The injured was rushed to Fingeshwar Hospital, from where he has been referred to Raipur Kalda Burn Hospital. The condition of the young man remains critical during treatment.

Both legs badly burnt, serious head injury too

After the chaos at the spot, the friends took the burnt youth to the hospital. Doctor Vipin Lahare of Fingeshwar Community Health Center said that both the legs of the injured Ved Ram Sahu are badly burnt and there is a risk of serious head injury too. After first aid, he has been immediately referred to Raipur.

Contractor-engineer's setting, extreme negligence

At the time of the accident, 33 KV supply was suddenly started in the transformer. The surprising thing is that this work was being done without any proper permit or technical knowledge. Ved Ram was neither a departmental employee nor trained, yet he was made to climb the transformer.

Operator shut down feeder supply without permission

Operator Naveen Magar, who was present at the time of the incident, admitted that no written order to shut down the feeder was taken from the junior engineer. The transformer had lines of both feeders – Mahasamund and Phingeshwar, and during that time the supply of Mahasamund started, which caused the accident.
