One Killed, One Injured as Motorcycle Collides with LPG Cylinder-Laden Truck in Balodabazar

A road accident claimed the life of a young man and left another seriously injured after a motorcycle collided head-on with a truck carrying domestic LPG cylinders near Dongridih village in Balodabazar district on Sunday morning. Police said excessive speed and possible negligence are suspected to be the primary causes of the crash.

The incident occurred on January 19 within the limits of Lavan police station when two youths were travelling on a motorcycle toward Kasdol. As they approached a stretch near Dongridih, their bike reportedly rammed into an oncoming truck loaded with household gas cylinders. The impact was severe, killing one of the riders on the spot.

The second rider sustained injuries and was rushed to Kasdol hospital, where he remains under treatment. Hospital authorities said his condition is being monitored, though no official medical bulletin had been issued at the time of filing this report.

Police officials said the truck was en route to Kasdol carrying a consignment of LPG cylinders. The truck driver immediately stopped the vehicle after the collision and informed the police. Officials noted that none of the cylinders were damaged in the crash, averting what could have been a major disaster involving fire or explosion.

“Prima facie, the accident appears to have occurred due to high speed or loss of control,” a police officer said, adding that a detailed investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events. The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination, and a case has been registered under relevant sections of law.

Local residents said the stretch near Dongridih is prone to accidents, particularly during early morning hours, due to speeding vehicles and limited visibility at certain bends. They renewed demands for improved road safety measures, including warning signboards, speed breakers and better lighting.

Police have begun recording statements from witnesses and are examining the vehicles involved to assess mechanical factors, if any. Authorities also said they would review traffic patterns and safety concerns along the route as part of the inquiry.

Road safety officials reiterated the need for motorists to adhere to speed limits, especially on rural and semi-urban roads where heavy vehicles frequently operate. “Even a momentary lapse can turn fatal,” an official said, urging riders to wear protective gear and avoid overspeeding.

The incident adds to a growing list of road fatalities in the district, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic norms and targeted interventions at accident-prone locations.
