More than 200 residents from Sahebin Kachar village blocked National Highway 130C for three hours on Tuesday morning, demanding action on eight key issues including roads, education, and healthcare.
The protest started at 8 am in the core zone of Udanti Sita Nadi Sanctuary. Villagers sat on the highway, halting buses and other vehicles on both sides until officials provided written assurances.
Police from Indagaon station arrived first, followed by the tehsildar and SDOP, who tried to persuade the crowd. Protesters, led by village heads Arjun Nayak and Roopsingh Markam, refused to budge, citing repeated unfulfilled promises.
Their demands include constructing a 25-km paved road from Bamhnijhola to the Odisha border, restoring a relocated tribal girls' hostel and school to the original site with new buildings, electrifying unelectrified villages, completing school structures under the 2023 Chief Minister's School Jatan Yojana in dependent hamlets like Karlajhar, Nagesh, and Kodomali.
They also seek deployment of an absent teacher at the local secondary school, activation of a installed geo tower, power and water supply at Karlajhar sub-health centre, and restart of an incomplete nal-jal scheme.
Villagers submitted a memorandum to the collector on October 28 but saw no progress. Nayak said years of assurances left them frustrated, prompting the blockade as a last resort.
Mainpur Tehsildar Ramesh Kumar Mehta issued written commitments, promising action on all points within three months. Traffic resumed afterward.
The agitation highlights ongoing struggles for basic amenities in remote tribal areas despite prior complaints.
