Over Tobacco Refusal, Man Kills Friend in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur; Arrested

A 35-year-old man was beaten to death by his friend in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district after refusing to share tobacco. The incident took place in Konkel–Charaikhara village under Narayanpur police station limits. Police have arrested the accused, identified as Sandeep Ekka.

According to officials, the victim, Ashok Ram (35), and Sandeep were warming themselves at a neighbour’s courtyard on the evening of 18 November. During the conversation, Sandeep asked Ashok for tobacco. When Ashok declined, citing financial constraints, an argument broke out.

The dispute escalated as Ashok walked home, but Sandeep followed him, assaulted him with punches and kicked him hard in the chest. Ashok complained of severe chest pain throughout the night.

The next morning, Ashok told his family that he needed to be taken to the hospital. However, his condition worsened on the way, and he died before receiving medical care.

After receiving a complaint from Ashok’s uncle, Vidyadhar Ram (57), police registered a case under Sections 103(1) and 332(A) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Sandeep was arrested from his home and, during interrogation, confessed to the assault.

He was produced before a court and subsequently sent to judicial custody.

Villagers had earlier informed the local sarpanch about the fight. Before his death, Ashok had reportedly told the sarpanch that Sandeep had kicked him in the chest, causing severe pain.

Police are continuing further investigation into the incident.
