Raigarh House Theft: Cash, Jewellery Worth Rs 1.25 Lakh Stolen

Family had gone to Raipur for son’s convocation when thieves broke into the locked house in Raigarh; CCTV receiver also taken away

A theft was reported from a locked house in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district after unidentified burglars allegedly broke open the main door and decamped with cash, gold and silver jewellery worth around Rs 1.25 lakh. The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Kapu police station.

According to police officials, the family had travelled to Raipur to attend their son’s convocation ceremony when the theft occurred.

House found ransacked

Police said the complainant, 55-year-old Vishnuram Bhagat, is a resident of Godhi Khurd village in Kapu area and works in farming. His son is pursuing MBBS studies in Raipur. The family had left for Raipur on Sunday morning to attend the convocation programme.

The matter came to light the next morning after a neighbour informed the family that the house lock appeared to have been broken.

Bhagat immediately returned to the village from Raipur. On reaching home, he reportedly found household items scattered across the rooms and the cupboard forcibly opened.

Jewellery and cash missing

Initial reports indicate that the thief entered the house after breaking the front door lock and targeted valuables kept inside an almirah. Gold ornaments including a mangalsutra, chain, earrings and a ring were reported stolen. Silver anklets and around Rs 35,000 in cash were also missing.

The total loss has been estimated at nearly Rs 1.25 lakh, police said.

Local residents said thefts in isolated or locked homes have become a growing concern in some rural pockets, especially when families travel outside the district for functions or medical work.

CCTV receiver removed

During inspection of the house, the family discovered that the receiver connected to the CCTV cameras installed at the property had also been taken away.

Investigators suspect the accused may have removed the device deliberately to erase possible footage and avoid identification. However, police officials have not ruled out other angles and said nearby areas are being checked for clues.

Sources familiar with the investigation said police are also trying to gather information about suspicious movement in and around the village during the period when the family was away.

Police begin investigation

After returning home and searching the surrounding area without success, the victim lodged a complaint at Kapu police station.

A case has been registered against an unidentified accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions related to housebreaking and theft.

Kapu police station in-charge Ingeshwar Yadav confirmed that a team visited the spot soon after receiving information about the theft.

“The family had gone to Raipur for their son’s convocation ceremony. During that period, the accused entered the locked house and committed theft. A case has been registered and efforts are underway to trace the accused,” the officer said.

Search for suspect

Police teams are now examining possible entry and exit routes around Godhi Khurd village. Officers are also speaking to local residents and checking whether any outsiders were seen near the locality around the time of the incident.

No arrests had been made till the filing of this report.

The Raigarh house theft has once again highlighted concerns around security in locked homes, particularly in semi-rural areas where CCTV coverage and night surveillance remain limited.
