In Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, the electricity department has intensified action against consumers with pending power bills ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹40,000. As part of a special drive, power connections of 298 defaulters were disconnected over two days, while outstanding dues worth around ₹3.7 crore were recovered from 153 consumers.
According to officials, teams from outside districts were deployed to carry out inspections and disconnections. The operation was launched on Monday (December 22), with 12 teams arriving in Raigarh from districts such as Sarangarh and Janjgir.
On the first day, electricity supply to 174 consumers was cut, and arrears amounting to nearly ₹21 lakh were recovered from 77 defaulters. On Tuesday, out of a list of 207 consumers, connections of 124 defaulters were disconnected, leading to a recovery of ₹16 lakh from 76 consumers.
Officials said many consumers had failed to clear their electricity bills for a long period, prompting the department to take strict measures. From Wednesday onwards, inspections will continue for two more days. If any consumer is found using electricity without paying dues or reconnecting supply illegally, cases will be registered under the Electricity Act and strict legal action will follow.
Executive Engineer (Zone One) R.K. Rao stated that the special drive was conducted with the help of teams from other districts to ensure transparency and effectiveness. He warned that consumers who restore connections without authorization after disconnection will face further action as per law.
