Raipur Hit-and-Run Case: BJP MLA Renuka Singh’s Son Arrested, Released on Bail; Victim Critical

A late-night road accident in Raipur has sparked public concern after Balwant Singh, son of former Union Minister of State and BJP MLA Renuka Singh, was arrested and released on bail within hours for allegedly hitting a motorcyclist with his car. The injured rider remains in critical condition at a city hospital.

According to police, the incident occurred around 1:15 am on January 5 near Agrasen Dham Chowk under the Telibandha police station limits. A car allegedly driven by Balwant Singh rammed into a motorcycle ridden by Tribhuvan Singh Thakur (34), a DJ event professional and resident of Telibandha. The impact threw the biker several metres onto the road, causing severe injuries.

What happened
Eyewitnesses said the car was moving at high speed when it lost control and struck the motorcycle at the intersection. The collision was so forceful that the vehicle’s airbags deployed and the front portion of the car was badly damaged. While locals alerted the police and shifted the injured man to hospital by ambulance, the driver fled the spot, leaving the car behind.

Police action
Telibandha police registered a case under Sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash and negligent driving. The damaged vehicle was seized. Following a complaint by the victim’s brother, Raj Narayan Singh, police traced the driver through vehicle ownership details and witness accounts. Balwant Singh was arrested on the night of January 6 and subsequently granted bail from the police station, as the offences are bailable.

Investigation findings
Police confirmed the car is registered in the name of Jaiprakash Upadhyay, a resident of Kushalpur in Surguja district. On being served notice, the owner stated that Balwant Singh was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. During questioning, the accused claimed the accident occurred while returning from Jora Mall, alleging the motorcycle appeared suddenly at the crossing, causing him to lose control.

Victim’s condition
Doctors said Tribhuvan Singh Thakur suffered multiple injuries and remains under intensive medical care. His condition is described as serious but stable.

Broader context
The case has reignited debate over road safety and equal application of the law. Chhattisgarh has seen a steady rise in road accidents in recent years, with official data showing thousands of deaths annually due to overspeeding, negligent driving and traffic violations.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and further action will depend on medical reports and forensic findings.
