Raipur Municipal Corporation Undertakes Major Anti-Encroachment Drive, Removes 73 Illegal Shop Sheds

In a decisive action against encroachments, the Raipur Municipal Corporation, in coordination with local police, demolished 73 illegal shop sheds along Santoshinagar Main Road on Wednesday. The move, aimed at easing traffic flow and keeping public pathways clear, also involved the seizure of goods placed on the road and the issuance of e-challans totaling ₹12,000 to the encroaching shop owners.

The operation was conducted across Zone 6 and Zone 10 under the supervision of municipal and police officials. Shopkeepers were initially warned to remove obstructions from public roads, but non-compliance led to the dismantling of unauthorized structures and confiscation of merchandise. Alternate traffic arrangements were made to minimize disruption to commuters during the drive.

Officials noted that temporary structures and goods spilling onto roadways in commercial areas had long contributed to congestion. Recent complaints and inspection reports prompted the authorities to initiate this enforcement action. The administration reported noticeable improvement in traffic flow on key thoroughfares and better access for emergency services following the operation.

Responses from traders’ groups were mixed. While some shopkeepers called for permanent solutions and alternative arrangements, the administration emphasized that encroachment on public roads is unacceptable under any circumstances. Authorities further clarified that similar operations will continue in the future without prior notice, with penalties and seizure measures applied to violators.

Urban management experts suggest that sustained results require ongoing monitoring, clear demarcation of public spaces, and consistent dialogue with traders. Such measures, they argue, will reduce disputes and have a lasting impact on city traffic management.

The state administration reiterated its commitment to keeping public roads safe and accessible. Anti-encroachment campaigns in Chhattisgarh are part of broader urban reforms aimed at improving city infrastructure and management. Officials have urged citizens and businesses to cooperate, ensuring orderly markets and uninterrupted traffic in Raipur.
