Raipur to Enforce Complete Ban on Meat Sales on January 26 and 30

The Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) has announced a complete prohibition on the sale of meat and mutton across the city on January 26 and January 30, observing Republic Day and Mahatma Gandhi’s Martyrdom Day. The order applies to all municipal limits and will remain in force for the entire duration of both days.

According to officials, the directive was issued on the instructions of the Mayor in compliance with guidelines from the Chhattisgarh government’s Urban Administration and Development Department. The ban covers all meat shops, slaughterhouses, hotels, restaurants, and roadside eateries operating within Raipur city.

Municipal authorities stated that the decision aims to uphold the sanctity of the two national occasions and ensure public sentiment is respected. Republic Day marks the adoption of the Constitution of India, while January 30 is observed nationwide as a day of remembrance for Mahatma Gandhi.

The Health Department of the municipal corporation has been tasked with enforcing the ban. Health officers and sanitation inspectors across all civic zones have been directed to conduct continuous inspections to ensure strict compliance. Special teams will monitor commercial areas, food establishments, and high-footfall locations throughout the city.

“A zero-tolerance approach will be followed. Any individual or establishment found violating the order by selling or serving meat will face immediate action,” a senior municipal official said. The action may include seizure of prohibited items and initiation of legal proceedings under relevant municipal laws.

The civic body has also issued an advisory to hotel owners, shopkeepers, and vendors, urging them to cooperate with enforcement teams and adhere to the directive on the specified dates. Officials emphasised that the order is temporary and limited to the two days in view of their national significance.

Slaughterhouses within the municipal jurisdiction have also been instructed to remain closed. Authorities confirmed that advance communication has been sent to traders’ associations to avoid confusion and ensure voluntary compliance.

Officials added that the measure is not new and similar restrictions have been enforced in previous years during national observances. The administration believes that proactive monitoring will prevent violations and help maintain law and order.

Residents have been requested to report any breach of the ban to local civic officials. The municipal corporation said it will review compliance after the observance period and take further steps if required.
