Raipur Traffic Police Book 1,523 Drunk Drivers in 2025; 680 Licences Suspended

The Raipur Traffic Police intensified its crackdown on drunk driving in 2025, booking 1,523 motorists for driving under the influence and suspending 680 driving licences, officials said on Monday. The sustained enforcement drive aims to curb road accidents and improve night-time safety across the capital.

According to traffic police data, checks were conducted daily between 11 pm and 2 am at key junctions and arterial roads using breathalyser machines. Vehicles driven by offenders were seized on the spot and moved to the traffic headquarters. Drivers were subsequently produced before court under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, and vehicles were released only after payment of fines and completion of legal formalities.

Officials said enforcement has been consistent through the year, with targeted checks during weekends and festive periods. Over the past week alone, 12 cases were registered, while December saw 52 cases till December 28. The year-long figures underline the scale of the problem and the police response, a senior traffic official said.

Month-wise data shows notable fluctuations. The highest number of cases—261—were recorded in August, coinciding with increased social gatherings and late-night movement. February followed with 196 cases, while November saw 89 cases. October registered the lowest number at 40. Other months included January (120), March (149), April (111), May (156), June (136), July (57), September (155) and December (52 till December 28).

Beyond fines and prosecutions, licence suspension has emerged as a key deterrent. Of the 1,523 offenders booked in 2025, 680 drivers faced licence suspension after due process. Police said repeat offenders and those found with high blood alcohol content were prioritised for stricter action.

Traffic officials stressed that the campaign is preventive, not punitive. “Drunk driving remains a major contributor to fatal accidents, particularly at night. Continuous enforcement, coupled with licence suspension, is essential to change behaviour,” an official said. The department added that awareness drives were also conducted alongside enforcement to warn motorists about the risks and legal consequences.

The traffic police said the special drive will continue into the coming months with additional checkpoints, mobile patrols and surprise inspections. Coordination with local police stations has been strengthened to ensure swift action and court follow-ups.

Authorities urged citizens to plan safe transport, designate sober drivers or use taxis and app-based services, especially during late hours. “Safety on roads is a shared responsibility. Enforcement will remain firm, but public cooperation is crucial,” the official added.
