Irrigation Scope to Expand from Kosarteda Dam; Bastar Airport Project Stalled

Irrigation capacity is set to increase with developments at the Kosarteda Dam. Meanwhile, progress on the Bastar Airport project remains stalled due to pending clearances and coordination delays.

A project worth Rs 42 crore has been prepared for the renovation and expansion of canals connected to Kosarteda Dam in Jagdalpur.

At present, the irrigation capacity of the dam is 11 thousand hectares, but due to dilapidated canals, only half the area is irrigated. Now the work of repairing 30 km new canal and old canals will start, which will provide water to 5 thousand hectares of additional land. This will also benefit the farmers in Rabi crops, and will also increase water use efficiency.

Obstacle in the development of Bastar Airport

Many important works are to be done with the amount of 20.40 crores approved for the upgradation of Bastar Airport, but even after 8 months the main work could not start. The 80-year-old runway is to be rebuilt at a cost of 11 crore 4 lakhs, but the tender is stuck due to non-availability of a company as per DGCA standards. The same is the condition of the flight isolation bay. At the same time, tenders have been done for small works like peri-ferry road and wire fencing. Work is expected to start after the rains, but existing flights may remain closed during the construction of the runway.
