SIMS Performs Successful Cornea Transplants on Four Patients, Restoring Vision Lost to Farm Injuries

The Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) in Bilaspur has successfully performed cornea transplants on four patients, restoring their vision after severe eye injuries caused during rice harvesting. The complex surgeries were carried out by the Department of Ophthalmology, led by Dr. Suchita Singh and Dr. Prabha Sonwani, marking a significant medical achievement for the state.

The patients, aged between 35 and 50, included two men and two women from Bilaspur district, all suffering from fungal corneal ulcers. The infections resulted from eye injuries sustained while cutting rice, which led to complete whitening of the pupils and intense pain, bringing them close to losing their eyes.

Medical Intervention and Procedure
Initially, the ophthalmology team focused on controlling the infection to stabilize the patients. Following this, donor corneas provided by the local eye bank were successfully transplanted. The surgeries not only restored vision but also significantly improved the patients’ quality of life.

Expert Statements
Dr. Ramesh Murthy, Head of SIMS, highlighted that the success is a result of teamwork and advanced medical facilities at the institute. “The increasing awareness about eye donation is enabling patients to regain their vision. This is a testament to both community participation and our medical capabilities,” he said.

SIMS Medical Superintendent Dr. Lakhan Singh emphasized the importance of advanced procedures like cornea transplantation. “Our successful operations reflect SIMS’ commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare services. Eye donations through the eye bank are central to this life-changing work,” he added.

Preventive Measures and Awareness
Dr. Suchita Singh advised farmers to take special precautions during rice harvesting, including using protective eyewear. She urged anyone with an eye injury to seek immediate medical attention instead of self-medicating, as delayed treatment can lead to permanent vision loss.

The surgical team included associate professor Dr. Prabha Sonwani, PG students, nursing staff, and ward boys, whose coordinated efforts were key to the success of these complex procedures.

Significance
These successful cornea transplants underscore the advances in ophthalmic care in Chhattisgarh and highlight the importance of eye donation in restoring vision for patients with traumatic and infection-related corneal blindness.
