Six Arrested in Raipur While Planning Dacoity; Weapons Recovered from Scorpio Vehicle

Raipur police have arrested six men allegedly planning a dacoity in the Civil Lines थाना area, thwarting the crime before it could be carried out. Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted the accused while they were finalising their plan on Canal Road and recovered weapons from their vehicle, officials said on Friday.

According to police, the suspects had arrived in a Scorpio SUV and were discussing the execution of a targeted robbery. During questioning, the accused reportedly disclosed a detailed plan: three members would enter a selected house, two would remain outside to keep watch, and one would stay in the vehicle to facilitate a quick escape after the crime.

The arrests were made on Thursday evening around 5 pm near Durga Nagar on Canal Road, within the jurisdiction of Civil Lines police station. Police said the operation was launched immediately after receiving specific intelligence that a group was preparing for a dacoity at the location.

During a search of the Scorpio (registration number CG 23 J 6367), police recovered a sword, four wooden sticks, and a hockey stick. The weapons were seized under due process. Officials said the accused intended to flee the area immediately after committing the offence, using the vehicle as a getaway car.

The arrested men have been identified as Tikesh Shendre alias Billa (30), Alok Sahni (23), Nitesh Sahni (24), Shubham Sahni (19), Indra Kumar alias Sumit Nishad (25), and Kundan Sahni (26). All are residents of Raipur district, police said.

A senior police officer stated that the timely intervention prevented a serious crime. “Based on credible information, a team reached the spot and cordoned off the area. The suspects were apprehended without incident, and their plan was confirmed during preliminary interrogation,” the officer said.

Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 310(4) and 313, along with Section 27 of the Arms Act. The accused have been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway to ascertain whether they were involved in previous criminal activities or had additional accomplices.

Authorities said detailed questioning is ongoing to identify the intended target and determine the source of the weapons. Police are also examining call records and surveillance inputs to establish the group’s movements prior to the arrest.

Raipur police said a formal briefing with additional details will be shared after the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, officials reiterated their appeal to the public to report suspicious activity promptly, noting that community intelligence played a key role in averting the crime.
