Six Killed, Five Critically Injured in Explosion at Sponge Iron Plant in Chhattisgarh’s Balodabazar

At least six workers were killed and five others sustained critical injuries after a powerful explosion ripped through a sponge iron plant in Chhattisgarh’s Balodabazar district on Thursday morning, triggering a major rescue operation and prompting a government-ordered investigation into industrial safety lapses.

The blast occurred at a sponge iron unit located in the Bakulahi area under the jurisdiction of Bhatapara police station. According to officials, the explosion took place inside the plant’s coal furnace section during working hours, causing extensive structural damage and leaving large amounts of debris scattered across the site. Thick smoke enveloped the area immediately after the incident, creating panic among workers and nearby residents.

Police and district administration officials said rescue teams were rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the explosion. Fire services, police personnel and disaster response teams began clearing debris amid fears that more workers could be trapped. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, where their condition remains serious.88

The injured have been identified as Motaj Ansari (26), Sarafat Ansari (32), Sabir Ansari (37), all carpenters, and Kalpu Bhuiya (51) and Ramu Bhuiya (34), both helpers. Authorities said the identities of the deceased are still being verified, as several workers were from neighbouring districts.

Preliminary findings suggest that the explosion may have been caused by excessive pressure or a technical malfunction in the coal-based furnace used in the direct reduction process. However, officials cautioned that the exact cause will only be known after a detailed forensic and technical examination. A team of experts has been constituted to inspect the plant, examine safety protocols and determine whether negligence or regulatory violations were involved.89

Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh has taken cognisance of the incident and announced compensation for the families of the deceased. Senior officials said directions have been issued to ensure speedy medical treatment for the injured and to provide all necessary assistance to affected families. The state government has also asked the labour and industrial safety departments to submit a comprehensive report.

Sponge iron plants produce iron by removing oxygen from iron ore using coal or gas in high-temperature furnaces. The material is a key input for steel manufacturing, but the process carries significant risks if safety systems fail.

Thursday’s accident has once again raised concerns over industrial safety standards in the region, which hosts several small and medium-scale sponge iron units. Authorities said further action, including possible suspension of operations and legal proceedings, will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
