The five friends from Raipur were caught in Nepal's sudden floods while on a religious trip. They spent two days at higher ground, including one night inside their car, before returning home.

A short tea break turned out to be the difference between life and death for five friends from Raipur caught in the devastating floods in Nepal.The group returned to Raipur on Saturday after spending two difficult days in the flood-hit region. As soon as they stepped out of the railway station, they bowed to the ground and touched the soil, describing their return as a “second life”.The five friends — Dinesh Singh Thakur, Dinesh Ojha, Prem Singh Jagat, Narayan Sen and Yatendra Prakash — had left for Nepal on August 21 on a religious trip.

A tea break changed everything

The friends said they were travelling when they stopped for a short tea break. That seemingly ordinary pause delayed their journey by a few minutes.Soon afterwards, the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers experienced sudden flooding. The friends said they saw houses being swept away by the powerful water flow.They believe that if they had continued their journey without stopping for tea, their vehicle could have reached the affected stretch at precisely the wrong time.

Two days spent at higher ground

With roads and surrounding areas affected by the flooding, the group was unable to continue normally. They moved to a higher location and remained there for about two days while waiting for conditions to improve.One night was spent inside their car.The experience left the group shaken, particularly after witnessing the scale of destruction around them. Their account reflects the uncertainty faced by travellers caught in areas where rivers can rise rapidly during extreme rainfall.

Returned to Raipur safely

After managing to leave the affected area, the five friends eventually made their way back to Raipur.At the railway station, their return became an emotional moment. They bowed down and touched the ground before raising slogans in praise of Baba Pashupatinath and Baba Bhandari.For the group, the journey that began as a religious visit ended as an experience they are unlikely to forget.Their story also underlines how quickly conditions can change during extreme weather in mountainous regions, where a few minutes can sometimes determine whether travellers remain in a safe zone or find themselves in the path of a sudden flood.
