Deficient Rainfall Hampers Paddy Sowing in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh records only 55 mm average rainfall so far, with the weak monsoon severely affecting paddy sowing and raising concerns among farmers.

In the current monsoon season, an average rainfall of 55 mm has been recorded so far in Chhattisgarh. This is only 54 percent of the annual average rainfall of the same period in the last ten years. An average of 101 mm rainfall should have occurred in this period till now. Due to the indifference of monsoon in the state, the sowing of Kharif crops including paddy in the tehsils has been affected. The sowing of paddy has been done in about 70 thousand hectares of area. Whereas in this Kharif, the target of sowing paddy has been set in 39 lakh hectares of area. Farmers troubled by scanty and intermittent rainfall are now waiting for good rains, so that the sowing of Kharif crops can be expedited.

According to the state level flood control room established by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, out of the 33 districts of the state, except five districts, all other districts have received less than average rainfall. Only 8.6 percent average rainfall has been recorded in Narayanpur district. Similarly, Sukma has received 11%, Bemetara 16%, Dhamtari 18%, Kondagaon 19%, Mungeli 19%, Mohla Manpur Ambagarh Chowki 20%, Bilaspur 26%, Kakir 30%, Rajnandgaon 31%, Balod 35%, Bijapur 38% of average rainfall. Similarly, many other districts have received less than 50% rainfall. Only Surguja, Balrampur, Jashpur, Korea and Raigarh have received more than average rainfall.
