Polavaram Dam Threatens Submergence of 9 Villages in Chhattisgarh's Sukma District

Over 40,000 Dorla Tribals at Risk as Konta and Surrounding Areas Face Displacement; PM Modi to Chair Crucial Meeting Tomorrow

The construction of the Polavaram Dam poses a serious threat to Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, where nine villages, including Konta, are expected to be submerged. This could displace more than 40,000 members of the indigenous Dorla tribal community, devastating their homes and livelihoods. A high-level meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled for tomorrow to address the escalating concerns and explore potential solutions.

The Polavaram dam being built on the border of Andhra Pradesh will have a huge impact in Chhattisgarh. The most affected district due to this dam is Sukma, where the settlement of about 40 thousand Dorla tribals living in 9 villages including Konta will be destroyed. Now, to resolve this dispute, an important meeting of the Chief Ministers of the four states including Chhattisgarh will be held in Delhi tomorrow i.e. on 28 May under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The state's Water Resources Minister and senior officials will be present along with the Chief Minister in the meeting. Along with this, top officials of the Union Ministry of Water Power, Central Water Commission and Polavaram Project Authority will also participate. Prime Minister Modi's direct mediation in the meeting can prove to be decisive in finding an acceptable solution to the growing inter-state tension on issues like land submergence, tribal displacement and rehabilitation.

Polavaram Irrigation Project

Let us tell you that the Polavaram Project is a multi-purpose irrigation project on the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh, India. Its purpose is to provide irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, drinking water supply and water diversion in the Krishna River Basin. The project is located near Ramayyapeta village in West Godavari district.
