Traders Protest Against GST Raids in Ambikapur, Allege Illegal Extortion by Officials

A large number of traders in Ambikapur staged a citywide bandh on Sunday, protesting against alleged illegal extortion and harassment by the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department. The agitation, led by the local traders' association, saw a massive rally across the city’s main roads with business owners voicing their outrage.

Chanting slogans like “We are traders, not thieves” and “GST officials, wake up”, the demonstrators accused department officials of misuse of power under the guise of inspections. Most shops and commercial establishments across the city remained shut, bringing routine trade to a halt.

“We Object to Injustice, Not Enforcement”

Speaking to reporters, representatives from the traders' association stated that numerous raids have been conducted by the GST department over the past year, many of which lacked legal clarity. Traders alleged that small businesses with annual turnovers under ₹50 lakh are being handed tax demands exceeding ₹1 crore.

“Is it fair to subject small shopkeepers to such mental torture?” asked a senior member of the association. “Such an atmosphere can push an honest trader into depression or even lead to extreme steps like suicide,” he warned.

Traders Demand Sensitivity from the Government

While clarifying that they are not against paying taxes, the traders emphasized the need for the government to approach the situation with sensitivity, not hostility.

“We are taxpayers, not criminals. We demand respect and a fair chance to comply with the law. Heavy-handed raids and threats do nothing but destroy the trust between the government and the trading community,” said another protester.

Memorandum Submitted to Tehsildar

At the conclusion of the protest, a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister was handed over to Tehsildar Umesh Singh Baj. In the letter, traders demanded an immediate halt to arbitrary and one-sided inspections and sought assurance of a fear-free working environment for the business community.
