The Porbandar-Shalimar Hapa Express (12905) narrowly escaped a major accident. The high-speed train collided with a rail bridge between Jairamnagar and Latia, where repair work was being carried out by the engineering department. Seeing workers on the rail bridge, the train repeatedly blew its whistle. However, the workers refused to remove the rail bridge. Consequently, the loco pilot applied emergency brakes. The train stopped after hitting the rail bridge. Had it not stopped, it could have crashed. The incident has caused a stir within the railway and an investigation has been launched.
The incident occurred at 5 p.m. Friday. The Porbandar-Shalimar Hapa Express was heading towards Howrah on the down line. After leaving Bilaspur, the train picked up speed. The train had just reached the junction between km 698/20A and 698/18A between Jairamnagar and Latia when the driver noticed engineering department workers carrying goods from the rail bridge. The workers were transporting goods from the rail bridge. Seeing them, the train blew its whistle.
When the workers didn't move after the first whistle, the train driver became alert and blew the whistle repeatedly. The workers didn't move, nor was the railing removed. Sensing disaster, the driver applied the emergency brakes to stop the train. Even then, the train stopped after colliding with the railing. In this incident, the workers saved their lives by jumping off the railing, but they didn't remove the railing. This incident occurred due to the workers' negligence, averting a major tragedy.
