Train Fares for Long-Distance Routes Slightly Higher from Today: Marginal Increase in Mail/Express Tickets

Indian Railways has provided relief to short-distance travelers (up to 215 km) with no fare changes.

The Ministry of Railways has introduced a minor revision in fares for long-distance Mail and Express trains. The update involves an addition of 1 to 2 paise per kilometer in non-AC and AC categories, leading to an extra ₹26 or so for sleeper class on routes like Bilaspur to Delhi, and around ₹13 in general/unreserved coaches.

These updated rates are applicable starting today, December 26. Fares for sleeper and ordinary first-class have been adjusted, while reservation charges, superfast supplements, GST, and rounding rules remain unchanged.

Officials have confirmed that the new fares will only apply to bookings made on or after December 26, 2025. Pre-booked tickets, even for future travel, will not incur any additional fees. Updated fare lists will be posted at all stations.

A 1-2 paise per km hike will apply to non-AC and AC classes in Mail/Express trains.

Revised Fares by Distance Slabs

According to railway sources, the new structure keeps second-class ordinary fares unchanged for trips up to 215 km, benefiting commuters and short-haul passengers.

Beyond that:

  • 216–750 km: +₹5
  • 751–1,250 km: +₹10
  • 1,251–1,750 km: +₹15
  • 1,751–2,250 km: +₹20

These slab-based increases are phased for smoother implementation.

Direct Trains from Bilaspur to Delhi

Nearly 9-10 direct trains connect Bilaspur to Delhi, with a mix of daily and weekly operations. Prominent ones include Rajdhani, Sampark Kranti, Chhattisgarh Express, Utkal Express, Hirakud Express, and Humsafar Express.

These services see 5,000–7,000 passengers each day, meaning the modest hike will have a noticeable but limited effect on overall travel costs for frequent users.
