Two people were killed and a young woman was critically injured in a road accident in Durg district on Thursday morning after a sand-laden Hiwa truck collided head-on with a motorcycle. The incident took place near Mehandibadi on the Somni–Bhilai-3 main road.
According to police, the accident occurred within the limits of the Old Bhilai police station. Two women, identified as Bhumi (24) and Saroj, both residents of Ganiyari, had gone to Bhilai-3 in search of employment. While returning, they took a lift on a motorcycle ridden by Sumit Banjare (25), a resident of Patan Phunda, who was dropping them back to Ganiyari.
Near Mehandibadi, the motorcycle collided with a Hiwa truck coming from the opposite direction. Bhumi and Sumit died on the spot, while Saroj sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital, where her condition remains critical. The impact threw all three riders onto the road, and the motorcycle was completely damaged.
Old Bhilai police station in-charge Ambar Singh Bhardwaj said the truck driver fled the scene after the accident. The vehicle has been seized, and efforts are underway to trace the absconding driver with the help of CCTV footage from nearby areas.
Police said Sumit had been engaged just a few days ago, adding to the grief of his family. Following the accident, angry locals blocked the Somni–Bhilai-3 road, disrupting traffic for some time before police intervention restored normal movement.
The bodies have been sent to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Supela for post-mortem examination. Further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
