Wife Kills Husband with Axe on Diwali Night; Later Claims “A Ghost Did It”

 Police have since arrested the woman and her mother, who is accused of helping her carry out the brutal murder.

The victim, Anand Singh (35), lived with his wife Basanti Singh and their children in Godipara area of Jajawal village. On the night of October 20 — the very night the rest of the country was lighting diyas — darkness descended upon their home.

According to investigators, Anand returned home drunk after work and began arguing with his wife, suspecting her of infidelity — a frequent cause of domestic fights between the two. When the quarrel turned violent, Basanti, reportedly fed up with years of abuse, plotted to end it permanently.

She called her mother, Phoolmati Singh, for help. Together, the duo attacked Anand with an axe kept in the house. Basanti allegedly struck him multiple times on the face and head, killing him on the spot.

After the gruesome act, both women fled to Basanti’s maternal home. The next morning, Basanti returned to the village, pretending to be in shock. She raised an alarm, telling neighbors that her husband had been “killed by a ghost” during the night.

The villagers, however, were not buying it. They informed the Chandoora Police, who arrived with a forensic team. Blood stains on the wall, bed, and floor painted a story far scarier than any spirit tale.

During questioning, Basanti initially maintained her ghostly alibi but soon broke down under interrogation. Her nervous demeanor and inconsistent statements gave her away. Eventually, she confessed to the murder, implicating her mother as well.

Both women have been arrested and charged with murder under Section 302 of the IPC. Police say further investigation is underway to determine the sequence of events and motive behind the killing.
