A 35-year-old worker was killed in an industrial accident at the Siskol company’s plant in Bhilai on Saturday morning after a heavy iron plate slipped and fell on him during crane operations. The incident occurred at the company’s unit in the Hathkhoj industrial area and has raised fresh concerns over workplace safety in industrial zones.
The deceased has been identified as Lekhuram Kaushal, a resident of the Bhilai area. According to police, Kaushal was operating an overhead crane as part of his routine duties when the accident took place. He was transferring a large iron plate from one location to another inside the plant when the load reportedly became unstable.
Preliminary information suggests that while the crane was in motion, the iron plate slipped due to a sudden loss of balance and fell directly onto the operator. The impact caused severe injuries, leading to his death on the spot. Co-workers present at the site rushed to help, but Kaushal succumbed before any medical assistance could be provided.
The accident triggered panic inside the plant, with operations temporarily halted following the incident. Police from the Bhilai-3 police station reached the spot soon after receiving information and secured the area. The body was sent for post-mortem examination, and legal formalities were initiated.
A senior police official said statements of employees present at the time of the incident are being recorded to reconstruct the sequence of events. “We are examining whether there was any technical fault in the crane or negligence in following safety protocols. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation,” the official said.
Initial assessment points towards possible lapses in safety measures or a technical malfunction, though officials stressed that conclusions would be drawn only after a detailed inquiry. Investigators are also expected to review maintenance records of the crane and assess whether standard operating procedures were being followed at the time of the accident.
Industrial safety experts note that accidents involving overhead cranes often occur due to improper load securing, mechanical failure, or inadequate training. The incident has once again drawn attention to the need for strict adherence to safety norms, regular equipment inspections and continuous monitoring in heavy industrial facilities.
Company officials have not issued a detailed statement so far. Police said further action, including fixing responsibility, would depend on the outcome of the investigation and any violations found during inspection.
The incident adds to a growing list of industrial accidents in the region, prompting calls for stronger enforcement of safety standards to prevent loss of life in workplaces.
