Youth Congress protests against poor traffic management in Raigarh, demands immediate reforms

Traffic congestion has become a serious problem in Raigarh city of Chhattisgarh, with residents getting stuck in daily traffic jams. In response, office bearers and workers of the Youth Congress staged a protest in front of the traffic police station, raising slogans and submitting a seven-point memorandum demanding urgent improvements in traffic management.
On Monday around noon, Youth Congress state general secretary Rakesh Pandey, along with party workers, gathered near the Mahadev Temple and marched to the traffic police office while chanting slogans. The traffic DSP later held discussions with the protesters.
Youth Congress leaders said that traffic pressure in Raigarh, known as an industrial hub, has increased significantly, but the absence of strict enforcement and proper planning has worsened the situation. They alleged that the traffic system is deteriorating day by day.
Rakesh Pandey stated that commuting within the city has become extremely difficult, with two-wheelers and four-wheelers often getting stuck at intersections for one to two hours. He demanded separate parking facilities for industrial buses and strict action against illegal roadside parking. He warned that if corrective measures are not taken, the agitation would be intensified in the coming days.
Responding to the protest, Traffic DSP Uttam Pratap Singh said the memorandum had been received and assured that necessary steps would be taken. He added that over 7,000 challans were issued in the past year for no-parking violations—seven to eight times more than the previous year. Action has also been taken against no-entry violations and overspeeding vehicles, with fines amounting to nearly ₹4 crore. The traffic police, he said, continue regular patrolling to manage congestion.
Seven-point demands submitted by Youth Congress:
-
Strict enforcement against illegal parking on roads.
-
Action against shops, malls, and institutions that allow roadside parking despite having parking space.
-
Holding mall owners accountable for managing traffic during peak hours.
-
Review of traffic congestion near the bus stand and Carmel School due to buses and school traffic.
-
Action against illegal parking of dumpers on the Dhimrapur–Urdana–Punjipathra road.
-
Identification and development of designated parking areas across the city.
-
Establishment of cattle shelters (kanji houses) for stray animals to ease traffic congestion.
