Zone System Halted After Auto Drivers’ Protest

Following strong protests by auto drivers, authorities have temporarily put the zone system on hold, citing the need for further discussions and revisions.

The problem of traffic jam is increasing due to the haphazardly running autos and e-rickshaws on the roads of the capital. On one hand, the transport and traffic police have prepared a plan for the zone system on the instructions of the district administration, but they have not been able to convince the public representatives and auto unions about it.

The auto unions had even announced to run a campaign in protest. After the demand for a fully equipped auto stand and an online scheme like Ola-Uber came from the Municipal Corporation, the pace of preparations of the administration has slowed down. It is believed that the plan has been put on hold for the time being. While the traffic police and the Municipal Corporation are saying that more meetings will be held soon regarding the plan.

About two and a half months ago in April, when the traffic police called a meeting of the auto unions and started discussing the plan, objections were raised on the number of vehicles. Sources say that the Municipal Corporation and police officials were asked how much facility the government has provided in which auto stand. After this, the demand for a scheme like Ola and Uber was raised. The union members even accused the administration of not giving the information of the meeting officially and on time. Initially only 10-15 driver owners came to the meeting. Then the union leaders were called. Somehow a little crowd gathered in the meeting. But even then the protest started. There was talk of agitation and strike. Then the traffic police had assured to count the auto e-rickshaws and discuss with the Municipal Corporation to operate the auto service by creating an online app. But till now the actual number of autos has not been disclosed. There is no information about the online app. Not only this, the second meeting has also not been organized.
