‘Snakebite Deaths Biggest Threat in MP,’ Says CM Mohan Yadav at IIFM Event
Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has raised serious concerns over the alarming number of snakebite-related deaths in the state, calling it a major health and safety challenge. Speaking at the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the Forest Development Corporation at the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) in Bhopal, the CM urged officials to work on a comprehensive action plan to tackle this issue.
Snakebite: Leading Cause of Death in MP
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, CM Yadav said:
“If there is one reason that leads to the maximum number of human deaths in Madhya Pradesh, it is snakebite. We must treat this as a challenge and act proactively.”
He noted that the upcoming Nag Panchami festival often sees increased human-snake interactions, making awareness and prevention efforts critical.
‘No Formal Mechanism to Count Snakes in India’
The Chief Minister also revealed that India lacks an official system to count snakes:
“This is not the forest department’s fault. Across the country, there is no mechanism to count snakes,” Yadav added.
Untapped Potential of MP’s Forest Resources
Apart from addressing snakebite concerns, the CM stressed the need to leverage Madhya Pradesh’s rich forest resources for economic growth. Sharing an anecdote from Jodhpur, he said:
“While MP has some of the best teakwood in the world, Jodhpur exports furniture made from babool and mango wood globally. Imagine the response if we start exporting teak furniture.”
‘MP’s Forests Rival the Himalayas’
CM Yadav concluded on a strong note, saying:
“Our dense forests make Madhya Pradesh as strong as the Himalayas — just as rivers from glaciers nourish the mountains, our forests sustain our state.”
