10-Year-Old in Indore Loses Both Kidneys After Inhaling Whitener and Thinner for Two Years

A 10-year-old boy from Indore has lost both kidneys after two years of addiction to whitener, thinner, petrol, and other inhalants, in a case that has exposed a disturbing rise in substance abuse among children in the city.
The boy, a resident of Musakhedi, was found unconscious by locals and taken to MY Hospital, where doctors discovered complete kidney failure. With no relatives initially identified, hospital staff and volunteers from the Mahakal organization arranged his immediate treatment. He now undergoes daily dialysis as doctors attempt to stabilize his condition.
Hospital officials said the child’s blood reports showed dangerously high creatinine and urea levels, along with severe anemia. “Both of the child’s kidneys are damaged. His condition is serious but stable,” said MY Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jitendra Verma.
The boy’s mother, who works long hours in a catering service, said her son developed the habit while spending time with neighborhood children. “They started with tobacco and liquor, and later began sniffing whitener and thinner because it was cheap and easily available,” she said, adding that several other children in the area are similarly addicted.
Doctors have confirmed that prolonged exposure to such toxic substances can lead to irreversible organ damage. “Drug abuse, especially through inhalants, severely affects the kidneys. This case is alarming,” said Dr. Preeti Malpani, Superintendent of Chacha Nehru Children’s Hospital.
Local councillor Mahesh Baswal said he has repeatedly urged the police to curb the sale of whitener, thinner, and adhesives being misused as intoxicants. The incident has reignited public outrage, with calls for stricter enforcement.
Last year, Union Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya had warned police officials in Indore to crack down on illegal drug sales, citing the growing number of children falling prey to addiction in low-income neighborhoods.
