15-Year-Old Girl Dies After Falling Into Open Sewer Chamber in Shivpuri; Rescue Operation Lasts 4 Hours
Shivpuri, MP
A 15-year-old girl tragically lost her life after falling into a broken sewer chamber on Saturday night in the Santushti Apartment complex, located in the Kotwali police station area of Shivpuri. The victim, Utsavika, daughter of local businessman Devendra Bhadauria, was playing with other children in the society premises when she accidentally stepped on a broken lid of the chamber and fell into it.
According to eyewitnesses, Utsavika’s younger brother was just behind her and almost fell in too, but a nearby resident managed to pull him back in time.
Four-Hour Rescue Ends in Tragedy
Emergency services including the police, municipal corporation, and State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) were called to the scene. A four-hour rescue operation was launched involving water tankers and sewer suction machines to drain the chamber. The operation concluded at 12:40 AM when Utsavika's lifeless body was finally recovered.
Photos from the site show the intense rescue efforts, community involvement, and emotional scenes as the girl’s body was pulled out and transported on a stretcher.
Negligence Behind the Fatal Fall
Investigations revealed that the sewer chambers, about 15 feet deep, were located between duplex houses in the apartment complex. Their covers had been in a dilapidated condition for months, leaving dangerous open gaps. Despite repeated complaints from residents, no action was taken by the housing committee.
Local residents say children regularly play in the open areas near these chambers. On the fateful evening, Utsavika stepped on one of the weak covers, which gave way, leading to her fatal fall.
A Mother’s Grief and a Community’s Outrage
During the rescue operation, Utsavika’s mother sat nearby in a state of shock, hoping for her daughter’s survival. But when the body was recovered past midnight, that hope shattered.
The incident has sparked widespread anger and mourning in the community. Residents are demanding accountability from the apartment’s management committee, citing gross negligence and repeated ignorance of safety complaints.
Police are investigating the incident, and further legal action against responsible parties may follow.
