17-Year-Old Morena Girl Murdered by Family Over Love Affair; 23 Accused in Case

In Morena, a 17-year-old girl, Divya, was fatally shot by her father, Bharat Sikarwar, after he discovered she was in a relationship with a boy from another community. Her mother, Gudia, and younger brother assisted in the crime, while friends, neighbours, and relatives helped dispose of the body and destroy evidence. Police have filed an FIR against 23 people—11 named and 12 unidentified. Bharat and Gudia have been arrested, and authorities continue the search for the remaining accused.

Victim Background

Divya, a 12th-grade student, continued her relationship despite her father’s objections. On September 22, she was seen riding a scooter with her boyfriend, and Bharat had previously beaten her over the relationship.

Murder and Cover-Up

On the evening of September 23, around 7:30 PM, during a home aarti, Bharat shot Divya in a fit of rage. Her mother and brother helped plan the cover-up. Bharat initially called neighbour Deepak Sikarwar, claiming Divya had fallen from a fan. Deepak brought his Tata Nexon car, but Bharat later redirected them to a village instead of the hospital. Divya’s body was eventually transported using a Tata Magic vehicle.

Disposal of the Body

Divya’s body was taken to Bhagwan Singh Pura village in Galetha Panchayat. Bharat, Gudia, the minor brother, and relatives, along with villagers Ghansu Sikarwar, Sunil Sikarwar, Sonu, and Gudda Baghel, transported the body to the Kwari river. Stones were tied to the body before it was thrown into the river.

Discovery and Recovery

The murder came to light on September 27 when an unknown neighbour alerted the police. Bharat was taken into custody and confessed. Police, with the SCRF, recovered Divya’s body from the river on September 28 after an 18-hour rescue operation. FSL experts confirmed gunshot wounds, and the post-mortem at Gwalior Medical College verified homicide.

Confessions and Investigation

Following post-mortem results on September 30, Bharat and Gudia confessed, detailing the involvement of others in body disposal and evidence tampering.

An FIR has been filed against 23 individuals, including neighbours, relatives, and villagers who assisted in the crime. Bharat and Gudia are in judicial custody, while the police continue efforts to apprehend the remaining accused
