The Garh Kalika Temple is 1700 years old and was founded by the Parmar dynasty, now the Pawar dynasty. Dhar's Mata Kalika is the deity of 18 clans, including the Pawar royal family, the Upadhyay and Kshatriya communities. People from all these communities visit Dhar for worship during Navratri. After the morning Kakad Aarti, the temple is constantly crowded with devotees throughout the day.
An Ancient History
Historians believe that the Garh Kalika Mata Temple has a very old history. When King Vikramaditya was on his way to Maharashtra to conquer Saurashtra, he prayed in Ujjain and called upon the Mother Goddess to accompany him. Vikramaditya was a master of tantra and mantra. The Mother Goddess then placed a condition before the king: she was willing to accompany him, but she would stop if he looked back.
