25-Year-Old Drowns in Bhopal’s Bhadbhada Lake While Bathing With Friends
Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
A 25-year-old man drowned in Bhopal’s Bhadbhada Upper Lake on Tuesday evening while bathing with friends, police said on Wednesday. The tragic incident occurred near the sewage plant behind the local vegetable market during a casual outing.
Victim Identified as Shivam Mahajan
The deceased has been identified as Shivam Mahajan, a resident of Rahul Nagar and a graduate employed at a private company. According to Kamla Nagar Police Station In-Charge (TI) Nirupa Pandey, Shivam had gone to the lake for fishing along with three friends. While two friends stayed busy fishing, Shivam and another decided to take a bath near the lakeside.
Dive Turns Fatal
Eyewitnesses reported that around 4 pm, Shivam climbed onto a stone slab in a shallow section and jumped into the water. Moments later, he failed to resurface. His friend, alarmed by his disappearance, raised an alert and called for help.
Rescue Efforts and Recovery
Despite attempts by bystanders to locate him, Shivam remained missing. Police were notified, and a rescue team from the Bhopal Municipal Corporation was dispatched. After a two-hour underwater search, divers recovered Shivam’s body from the lake.
Investigation Underway
The body was sent to Hamidia Hospital for post-mortem. Police have registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC and initiated an investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that neither Shivam nor his friend knew how to swim, which likely contributed to the drowning.
Authorities have appealed to the public to exercise caution and avoid entering unfamiliar water bodies without proper safety measures.
