A shocking figure has come out in the report of Sample Registration System Bulletin 2022. According to the SRS report, Madhya Pradesh ranks first in the country in infant mortality rate. The report states that the current level of IMR in the country (26 infant deaths per thousand live births for the year 2022) is less than one-fourth of that of 1971 (129 infant deaths per thousand live births).
In the last ten years in India, IMR has seen a decline of about 35%. IMR has come down from 40 to 26 at the all-India level in the last decade. The corresponding decline in rural areas of the country is from 44 to 29, and for urban areas it is from 27 to 18, showing a decadal decline of about 34% and 33% respectively. Despite the decline in infant mortality rate in the last decades, at the national level (excluding rural-urban areas), one in every 38 infants dies within the first year of their life.
At the same time, Congress has launched a big attack on infant mortality rate. Congress spokesperson Bhupendra Gupta asked where does the budget of 4500 crores go every year.
