Bhopal Metro Nears Launch as CMRS Begins Final Safety Inspection

The long-awaited Bhopal Metro project is on the verge of becoming operational, with the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) team arriving in the city on Wednesday for its final inspection. Led by Metro Commissioner Janak Kumar Garg, the team will conduct a detailed review of tracks, stations, and safety systems through Thursday.
The inspection marks the last stage before the metro receives clearance for commercial operations. If the CMRS report meets required safety and performance standards, the green signal for the metro’s public launch will follow. Officials indicated that the Prime Minister’s Office has been briefed, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to flag off the inaugural run later this month.
The Bhopal Metro’s first route spans 16.05 kilometers from AIIMS to Karond, including a 6.22-kilometre priority corridor between AIIMS and Subhash Nagar Depot. While core infrastructure and systems are ready, interior finishing work remains at several stations including Subhash Nagar, Central School, DB Mall, Sargam Talkies, Rani Kamlapati, and AIIMS. Officials, however, maintain that all operational safety parameters have been met.
The CMRS visit follows two earlier inspections conducted in September and October, during which the team carried out trial runs and system tests. The ongoing visit is considered the most crucial, as it will determine whether the metro is cleared for public service.
According to officials, the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) has already submitted an “OK” report after technical trials, paving the way for this final inspection.
Metro construction began in 2018, with the first successful trial run conducted on October 3, 2023, in the presence of then Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Once approved, Bhopal will join Indore as Madhya Pradesh’s second city with an operational metro network.
