Three Killed as Pilgrims’ Vehicle Crashes into Stationary Trailer Near Ujjain

Three people, including the driver, were killed and five others critically injured after a passenger vehicle carrying pilgrims collided with a stationary trailer near Ujjain on Tuesday morning. The victims were part of a group travelling from Telangana to Ayodhya after offering prayers at the Mahakaleshwar temple, police said.

The accident occurred in the Nagjhiri police station area near Chandesari village when the Tufan vehicle, carrying 13 passengers, rammed into a trailer loaded with pipes that was parked along the roadside. Preliminary investigations suggest dense fog and poor visibility led to the driver failing to notice the stationary heavy vehicle in time.

Police officials said the impact of the collision was severe, killing the driver and two passengers seated in the front of the vehicle on the spot. The deceased were identified as Jagan, Masoom and the driver, whose identity was being confirmed. The remaining passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

One of the critically injured passengers was referred to Indore for advanced treatment, while four others are undergoing treatment at the district hospital in Ujjain. The condition of the injured is being closely monitored by doctors.

According to the police, the group had arrived in Ujjain from Telangana to attend early morning darshan at the Mahakaleshwar temple and had left for Ayodhya shortly thereafter. The vehicle was travelling via the Dewas route when the accident took place.

Investigators said the trailer involved in the accident was loaded with iron pipes and was parked on the side of the road. “Visibility was extremely low due to dense fog. It appears the driver could not see the stationary trailer in time, and the vehicle was moving at a relatively high speed,” a police officer said.

Local residents and passers-by rushed to the spot immediately after the crash. Along with the police, villagers helped rescue the injured passengers and arranged for their transportation to the hospital. Emergency services reached the site soon after receiving information about the accident.

Police have registered a case and initiated further investigation to determine whether proper safety measures, including warning signs and reflectors, were in place for the parked trailer. Officials said the bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, and their families have been informed.

The incident once again highlights the dangers of reduced visibility during winter mornings in the region and the risks posed by stationary heavy vehicles parked along highways without adequate warning signs. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution during foggy conditions and have reiterated the need for strict enforcement of road safety norms to prevent such accidents.
